√2 is the square root of 2, the number which when multiplied by itself gives 2. If you walk forward one metre, turn right and walk another metre, you will be √2 metres from where you started. A4 paper has the ratio 1:√2 so that two sheets placed side by side have the same ratio. The peak voltage of AC electricity is √2 times the quoted (RMS) value, e.g. 240 volts RMS peaks at 339 volts.
